200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens

Gibraltar Post  has been  commemorating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) with a wonderful issue alongside institutions from all over the world, most notably the ‘Dickens 2012’ official celebration in the United Kingdom.

 

On September 14, 2012, Gibraltar Post has been issued a set of four stamps  depict his portraits and books . Another issued is  one souvenir sheet consist of one stamp depict his portrait.

Charles Dickens was an English writer, generally considered to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian period and responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic novels and characters.

Australian Nobel Prize winners

 

 

17390671dSince 1915, when Australian William Lawrence Bragg shared the Prize in Physics, there have been some 11 Australian Nobel Laureates.

Australia Post  issued  a set of five stamps to commemorate the achievements of Australian Nobel Prize winners (or Nobel Laureates). The Laureates are represented by portraits by some of Australia's most respected artists.

 

Lawrence Bragg (1890-1971) was jointly awarded the prize in physics in 1915 for his ‘services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays'.

Howard Florey (1898-1968) was awarded the prize in physiology or medicine in 1945 ‘for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases'.

International Humanitarians – Mother Teresa & Henry Dunant

An Post (Ireland Post) celebrated the great International Humanitarian of Mother Teresa and Henry Dunant by issuing a set of two stamps depicts the both figures respectively on June 17, 2010. These stamps were designed by Ger Garland .

The 55c stamp shown Mother Teresa set against the Missionary of Charity in Calcutta. Mother Teresa was born Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in modern-day Macedonia,  on August 26, 1910. Moved by the desire to become a missionary, she left home at the age of 18 and travelled to the Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Dublin. While there, she studied English so se could teach the children of India with the Sisters of Loreto.

Florence Nightingale

 

To celebrate the centenary of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, Alderney Post issued a set of six postage stamps features  her  pioneering work in nursing .

Florence Nightingale, OM, RRC , was born into a rich, upper-class, well-connected British family at the Villa Colombaia,near the Porta Romana at Bellosguardo in Florence, Italy, and was named after the city of her birth. She was born on May  12, 1820 .

Nightingale was a celebrated English nurse, writer and statistician. As a Christian Universalist, Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night.

150th Anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt

 

The Republic of San Marino to commemorate the 150 years the birth of the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt, by issuing  the miniature stamp sheet features his four masterpieces “The Embrace”, “The Kiss”, “The Three Ages of Woman” and “Hope II” on February 29,2012.

Gustav Klimt was born in Vienna, in 1862, into a lower middle-class family of Moravian origin. His father, Ernst Klimt, worked as an engraver and goldsmith, earning very little, and the artist's childhood was spent in relative poverty. The painter would have to support his family financially throughout his life.

The 30th Birthday of HRH Duke of Cambridge

 

HRH Duke of Cambridge 30th First Day Covers

 

To celebrate the 30th birthday of HRH The Duke of Cambridge, Jersey Post launched  a set of four stamps on 21st June 2012  which reflect his military connections and achievements . As second in line to the British Throne, The Duke of Cambridge will, one day, become Head of the British Armed Forces.

Recently serving as a fully operational RAF Search and Rescue Pilot, The Duke still holds his officer commissions in the Royal Navy and the Army. He also holds various honorary titles which have been bestowed upon him by HM The Queen.

From the Blues and Royals, Prince William embarked on an intensive training course at Royal Air Force College Cranwell and received his RAF wings in April 2008 from his father, HRH The Prince of Wales.

Flight Lieutenant Wales undertook further helicopter flying and advanced training to graduate from the RSF Search and Rescue Conversion Course.

He was appointed Honorary Air Commandant of Royal Air Force Coningsby in October 2008.

The centenary of Mira Mihelič’s birth

Mira Mihelič was born on 14 July 1912 in Split. She is a Slovene’s  writer and translator has got a double Prešeren Award winner (1950, 1983).

Mira Mihelič was president of the Slovene Writers' Association (1963–1966) and of the Slovene PEN centre (1966–1975).

To commemorate the centenary of her birth, Slovenian Post issued a stamp set depicted her photo on January 27,2012.

 

Mira Mihelič is a good observer of the life around her, in her earliest works she painted a picture of life among the Slovene bourgeoisie (Obraz v zrcalu [Face in the Mirror], 1941). She died on 4 September 1985.

The moral decay of the bourgeois world is also dealt with in her dramatic works on the theme of the Second World War and the wartime occupation (Svet brez sovraštva [A World without Hatred], 1945, Ogenj in pepel [Fire and Ash], 1949), which are joined by plays featuring character- and dialogue-based comedy. She later republished her "bourgeois novels" in partly revised form as a selection entitled Plamen ali dim [Flame or Smoke].

Her stories about the social and psychological image of the bourgeoisie at a time of historical crisis were followed by two books for young readers and two historical novels, the first about a life of intrigue in the Ancient Roman city of Emona (Tujec v Emoni [A Stranger in Emona, 1978] and the second set at the time of the Congress of the Holy Alliance in Ljubljana (Cesta dveh cesarjev [The Road of Two Emperors], 1981).

In her novels, Mira Mihelič is a narrator of sublime, dynamic stories full of vivid fantasy; she is a connoisseur of human characters, which are revealed in skilfully designed literary portraits and meaningful dialogue.

As a translator of English, French and German literature, she translated more than 80 narrative and dramatic works by prominent authors. She also wrote a memoir entitled Ure mojih dni [The Hours of My Days] (1985). (Source: Slovenian Post Bulletin)

The 90th anniversary of HRH Grand-Duke Jean

 

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of  HRH Grand-Duke Jean , Luxembourg Post has issued the stamp set  on March 15, 2011. The issue comprises of two stamps depicted His photo and His youngest son, Prince Guillaume.

Grand Duke Jean has served His country as Chief of State for 36 years and can, on the occasion of His 90th birthday, reflect on a full career, rich in emotions and memories. Born on 5 January 1921 at Berg Castle and given the name Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d’Aviano of Luxembourg, He is the eldest son of the Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and Prince Felix of Bourbon Parma. After finishing His primary and secondary studies in Luxembourg, He completed His studies at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire County in England.

The 125th birth anniversary of Heino Eller

On March 07, 2012,  Estonia post issued the personality stamp set, and presented Heino Eller, an Estonian composer. The issue is only one stamp depicted his face with background of music note for celebrating the 125th of his birth anniversary.

Heino Eller (7 March 1887 – 16 June 1970), an Estonian composer and music teacher, graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatory, specializing in composition and music theory. 


In 1920 he returned to Estonia and set down to work at the Tartu Higher Music School as a teacher of theory and composition, laying the basis to a new generation of Estonian musicians whose bright names, such as Eduard Tubin, Alfred Karindi, Richard Ritsing, Karl Leichter, Olav Roots and Eduard Oja have become known as Eller's Tartu school.

The 200th Anniversary of Franz Liszt - Luxembourg

In the year 2011, the music world commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth and the 125th anniversary of the death of composer and virtuoso Franz Liszt.

The Luxembourg Post also issued the stamp set even only one stamp on September 27, 2011. The issued stamp depicted the paint of Franz Liszt.

At the end of his life, Liszt maintained a close relationship with his friend, Hungarian painter Mihàly de Munkàcsy and his Luxembourgish wife Cécile Papier. The deep friendship with the painter started in 1882, when the two men first met in Budapest.


At the end of April 1886, Liszt lived as a guest in the Parisian residence of the Munkàcsys. On the following 5 July, Liszt, now very ill, decided to take a rest break at the summer residence of the Munkàcsys in Colpach.

75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF LUCIANO PAVAROTTI

The Republic of San Marino commemorates his grandeur with a stamp dedicated to the anniversary of his birth.  The stamp issued on 5th October 2010 depicts Pavarotti's portrait on the left ,on the right, the chorus and orchestra.


Luciano Pavarotti, born in Modena on the 12th October, 1935, revealed his vocal talent at a very early age, passing hours in front of the record player and ransacking his father's record collection, an amateur tenor. In his teens he continued his vocal training with Maestro Arrigo Pola and then with Maestro Ettore Campogalliani.

Personality Stamp of Luxembourg - 2009

On May 12, 2009, Luxembourg Post issued the personality stamp set features the famous person of their country. The person depicted on three postage stamps are Henri Owen Tudor, Charles Bernhoeft, and Foni Tissen.

Henry Owen Tudor was  born on  1859 in Rosport.  Since a very young age, Henri Tudor was interested in electrical engineering and more particularly in lighting and in motors. Thomas Edison corresponded regularly with him and recommended the use of an accumulator to store energy during hours of low consumption and to redistribute this energy during hours of high consumption.



In 1881, Henri Tudor was still a student when he succeeded in building the first Tudor Accumulator which operated for 16 years without interruption. In 1884, Henri Tudor developed the energy car, a mobile accumulator-motor device for multi-purpose use: an electric motor for isolated farms, circuses, itinerant movie installations, military camps, etc.

Canadian Recording Artists - 2007

On June 29, 2007, Canadian Post issued the stamps set in souvenir sheet which composed of 4 postage stamps featuring the Canadian Recording Artists. The artists have  depicted  are Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray and Paul Anka.

Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, Jr  was  born on November 17 1938 is a Canadian singer-songwriter who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music, and has been credited for helping define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and internationally as a folk-rock legend.

Lightfoot's songs brought him international recognition in the 1960s. He experienced chart success in Canada with his own recordings, Lightfoot was one of his "favorite Canadian songwriters and is absolutely a national treasure.Lightfoot was signed to Warner Bros.
