Australian Legends - Fashion Designers - 2005

 
Every year since 1997 we have honoured the achievements of eminent Australians with a special Stamp release marking the Australia Post Australian Legends Award. The stamps have issued on January 21, 2005
The award comprises a gold replica Stamp presented to each recipient at an Australia Day lunch. This year's legends are Australian fashion designers: Prue Acton OBE, Jenny Bannister, Collette Dinnigan, Akira lsogawa, Joe Saba, and Carla Zampatti AM.

Prue Acton, OBE   was born in Benalla, Victoria .  She is an Australian fashion designer, and is often referred to as Australia's "golden girl" of fashion' during the 60's.
ln the 1960s Prue Acton brought Australian fashion to the attention of the world with her vibrant, youthful label. Acton graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1963, and established her own label.

 Two years later, New York's Lord Taylor devoted its windows to her clothes. By age 26 she had a multi-million-dollar business and was selling in four continents. Acton also designed the Australian Olympic uniforms (1978, Lake Placid, USA); (1984, Los Angeles); (1988, Seoul).

Jenny Bannister is an Australian fashion designer, based in Melbourne.Bannister studied Fashion Design and Production at RMIT's Emily McPherson College, and commenced her career in 1975 as a recycled denim designer.

The Bannister label began at the height of the 1970s radical fashion movement, and later evolved into couture and up-market boutique styles. In 1988, Bannister successfully shifted into contemporary evening wear, to which she now has a loyal celebrity following. Her designs are featured prominently in the Melbourne Fashion Festival and her pieces have also recently been auctioned at Christie's in London.
 



One of fashion's true originals, Bannister established her label in 1976. Her early punk-inspired work, seen by many as outrageous and subversive, is now recognised as being ahead of its time. Bannister opened her own boutique in Melbourne in 1997 and is now known for her meticulously constructed evening wear.

Collette Dinnigan was born in South Africa on 24 September 1965. She graduated from a fashion design course at Wellington Polytechnic and moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's costume department.
Dinnigan has achieved remarkable success since her label launch in 1990. The exquisite hand-made, ultra-feminine evening wear is sought after by celebrity clients worldwide.
 
She is the only Australian designer to be invited by Paris's Chambre Syndicale for its Prét-a-Porter official programme. Dinnigan also designs a lingerie line for Britain's Marks & Spencer.

Akira Isogawa is one of Australia's most prominent contemporary fashion designers. Born in Japan, he immigrated to Australia in 1986, lsogawa graduated from East Sydney College in 1995. He also opened up a store in Woollahra, Sydney, in 1993. By the late 1990s, international sales and recognition established his reputation. His commercial fashion label, Akira, concentrates on women's fashion.



He created a sensation at the first Mercedes Australian Fashion Week held in 1996 impressing Joan Burstein, owner of London store Browns. She subsequently bought his entire collection.
 



ln 1999, lsogawa was named Australian Designer of the Year and Best Women's Wear Designer. He has designed costumes for the Sydney Dance Company and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He is the only Australian fashion designer to exhibit solo at a major national or state institution.

Joe Saba ,  born in 1940, is an Australian fashion designer and fashion business owner. He has had a powerful influence on Australian fashion .He started his fashion business in 1965 with the opening a store in 287 Flinders Lane Melbourne called the Joseph Saba Shirt and Sweater Shop. In 1969 he launched the jeanswear label "Staggers" and for almost 30 years, his men's and women's label "Saba" sold in his shops nationally.
 
 During the 1970s and 1980s, Saba emerged as one of the world's leading fashion buyers introducing Australia to new influences, especially from japan. ln 1996 his company won the Australian Fashion Menswear Award and was named as the Powerhouse Museum's Fashion House of the Year.

Carla Zampatti AM was born on 19 May 1942 . She  is an Italian-Australian fashion designer and businesswoman. Born in Lovero, Italy, Carla settled with her family in Australia in 1950. In 1965, she produced her first small collection for Zampatti Pty Limited, followed two years later by a national launch, and in 1970, by the establishment of Carla Zampatti Limited, a label that was to become a by-word for beautiful clothes, which combine Australian creativity with Italian style.

 



Carla Zampatti is an iconic name in Australian fashion. With her unique blend of European style and Australian savvy, Zampatti has long been recognised as both an inimitable designer and a superb businesswoman.

Carla Zampatti is Executive Chairman of Carla Zampatti Pty Limited. She is also a Trustee of the Sydney Theatre Company Foundation Trust, and is a Board Member of the Australian Multicultural Foundation.
In addition to her chic clothes sold in her nationwide retail chain, Zampatti has designed cars for the female market. Her own label extends to fashion accessories, fragrances and eyewear.(Resource from: The Australian Postal Corporation, Wikipedia)
