The Indonesian Post issued the commemorative stamp series of the 100th Anniversary of Bung Karno on June 06, 2001.This issue depicts Soekarno pictures in 4 postage stamps.
Bung Karno was born on June 6, 1901 in Surabaya. He was born on the break of the day. Kusno is initially name given by his parent. Since he was a sickly boy, then his name changed with Karno and added with prefix “Soe”, became Soekarno. It is means the good knight.
With his strength personality, he became a dominant leader among his friends. His thought “ A person won’t be able to lead a country if he can’t adjust himself to tradition of his country ”. So the young Soekarno decided to wear Peci as his identity.
The Dutch colonialism drained up the Indonesia natural resources, swept away the national identity and destroy the national strength. This reason has found by Soekarno that the loss symbols of national identity cause Indonesian people into a weak and coward nation. Therefore Soekarno encourage people by use the social power and the nationalism in the national movement to reach the freedom for Indonesia totally .
Bung Karno said that freedom could not be won only in a wink. Freedom needs sacrifices, self-confidence and spirit of the national struggle.Though the Dutch several time sent him to jail, the people enthusiastically followed the Soekarno’s exclamation.Soekarno was still sure that people would unite and fight together to get the freedom.
The Japanese occupation had stopped the Dutch government colonialism in Indonesia. After several years, the news of the Japanese loss had spread away. On 16 August 1945, the tension and confusion situation overwhelmed in Jakarta. Soekarno was kidnapped. The people waited impatiently to proclaim their freedom.The Proclamation was conducted at 10 o’clock morning on 17 August 1945.
